I’m a guy. I play music and share random stories and rants from my life. This used to be my official music bio, which I now think is cheesy and self-indulgent. But I’ll post it anyway, because I’m too lazy to write an entirely new one from scratch. Did I say lazy? I meant EFFICIENT!

J.Lynn Johnston has a gift for capturing the small moments in life, and expanding on them with wit and insight. He grew up in the heart of Californias Silicon Valley, the son of a music teacher and a computer whiz. Those roots are worn proudly on his sleeve as J.Lynn’s music moves with an articulate intelligence without ever losing its hook.

J.Lynn Johnston draws on influences that run from Motown to Refused. The result is a unique brand of Indie-Blue-Eyed-Soul that demands a repeat listen. J.Lynn lives in Los Angeles with Benatar, his Great Dane.

my friend introduced me to your music, and dammit, I gotta say, you are highly attractive, not only physically, but musically, and more than likely mentally.
    Good for you.
    ten dkp plus

  2. Well THANKS, Brittany! Not only for the compliments, but for the DKP. I could use the extra since I’m hoping to roll on a new epic chest-piece soon. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. Barber says:

Yo. It’s barber. Random question. What is the name of the drummer that started Flytape. Is he still kicking around in the Bay?

  4. HA! You made me laugh ALOT right now– thank you long lost friend!

Oh, and after reading your book list I must tell you to go get “Everything Matters!” by Ron Currie Jr.

    You’re welcome in advance.

  5. jeff says:

  6. Flamberg says:

    Oh Dear J.
Your face on youtube – it’s good. But, why you leave Mad At Gravity? This is amazing music. Please come back. PLEAZEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Flamberg,

-Thanks for listening to Mad at Gravity! I’m super proud of the music we made, so it’s awesome to hear that it’s appreciated outside of just my own mother’s living room. Glad you found me here and on YouTube as well! =)

-I left Mad at Gravity because it was essentially a dictatorship run by an ignorant, toxic asshole. From the beginning, it was a tragically doomed project on the personal level. Suffice it to say, a MaG reunion with the original members will absolutely never happen. Those bridges have been burned beyond ash. Me “leaving,” or whatever their publicist spun it as more than 8 years ago, was not on a whim. It was one of the best things I’ve done for my heart and mind.

-I reconciled with Bosco and James pretty quickly after they each found their way out of the MaG debacle as well. What the fans don’t realize is that those two were the instrumental core of the band. And THEY quit the project as well. They just happened to leave that mess AFTER I did, so nobody addresses the real root of the problem (his name rhymes with ‘Snake’). There’s nothing to “come back” to!

-I’m satisfied with where I am and what I’m moving on towards. Seriously though, thanks for still paying attention and continuing to care! =)

    Love and old news,

  8. Serena says:

Hey. Just wanted to give props as I stumbled across “Walk Away,” while downloading another band (sneaky bastards), and wanted to quickly express some appreciation for good music and a great voice. Wish I could find more of your music somewhere, but I’m doing okay with the song being on constant replay around me for the last few days. I can’t get enough of the lyrics. It’s too bad the band couldn’t make it, but you seem to be doing alright. PS about the bio, Shark Week is the shiznat!!

    All the best.

  9. Laura says:

I want one of you in my life.

  10. Carrera says:

Hey J.Lynn! You are awesome! Thanks for this great music!
you also have a fan in Spain. ๐Ÿ™‚
    Wish you all the best!

  11. Craig williams says:

    Hey dude!!
    Awesome voice!
Just discovered you on YouTube. (gets kinda boring after while watching people getting owned….)
So basically was wondering if you could e-mail the chords to your version of these arms of mine as
it’s BY FAR the best version I’ve ever heard.
Slowly learning now to sing and play at the same time…….trouble is I was never good at the whole pat your stomach and rub your head at the same time thing so it’s gonna be a looooong haul. Ha ha.

  12. Clarence B. says:

Hi J.Lynn! I quite never hoped to have a chance to tell you how I appreciate your work in MaG. I dare say that this is one of the most underrated bands ever. Despite having recorded only one album, it still deserves to be on the top because of how great it is.

But, um, where are my manners? My name’s Christopher, I’m 19, I live in Poland and I suppose we don’t know each other well enough to sink into details, haha ๐Ÿ˜›

I discovered your music like two years ago, and I totally loved it. Walk Away is still my favourite, I even had it set as an alarm on my phone. And, well, it worked… Partially. Even though it woke me up everytime I heard it, it was so great that I couldn’t get my arse up and just lain in bed listening to it :p So I guess you’re responsible for me being late for the school that few times :p

Nevermind :p It’s good to see that someone as famous as you (you’re loved among my friends here in Poland :]) is such a decent person. I must say I really like your style and I’ll continue visiting your blahg, J.Lynn ๐Ÿ™‚

Too bad MaG’s gone. I don’t know the exact reason of you leaving the band and I won’t ask you about it. I respect what you did, yet I hope it never happened. I mean, you have a great voice (don’t know how’s it now, after more than eight years :p), and the instrumental part of MaG music was something fresh, something great, unheard of even at this day.

You said Bosco and James left too, and there’s nothing to come back to… Still, I hope to turn on the TV one day, and see you saying that Mad at Gravity is back ๐Ÿ™‚ Damn, that would be awesome.

I suppose you’re fed up with me by now :p So that’s all I wanted to tell you. I really hope that after all the whining from MaG fans you’ll think about at least meeting with the rest of the band and giving us one last performance ๐Ÿ™‚

Much appreciation J.Lynn! Looking forward to hearing from you ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Eric says:

Hey man.. big fan here… I had no other way to contact you, I have some music that I am working with a few name people and would love for you to throw vocals on it if you were interested. Email me and I could tell you more about it
    Thanks man,

  14. Elaine says:

Hey, I just ran across your site via a video on you tube of you and your gorgeous Great Dane. She is lovely! I still miss my ex’s Dane, but not him…way too smart for that! lol

Anyway, the music is also really great, thanks for sharing your talent with the world. It needs more genuine musicians who speak to the soul. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Sing proud,

  15. Justin says:

J.Lynn…love your music man, your cover of burn is awesome, i could listen to that song all day long. but look man, i was hoping you could do me a solid, and make a cover of “Hey Jealousy” by the Gin Blossoms. You know you want to.

  16. ramo says:

hey hey your music i great.i love it.

bon jovi livin on the prayer…maybe you can send me tabs.

  17. Derek says:

You are my last remaining hope. So, no where in the galaxy can I find a copy of the Mad at Gravity Album. Please tell me where I can grab it. You have an amazing sound and I want to hear it against a full band! My copy of the album was lost long ago.

Regardless of MaG, I am happy to see you are keeping your music alive and well. Your muse cover…amazing, consider my mind blown.

  18. Sean Bernhard says:

I have to say that your music and the lyrics you’ve written ( as both part of Mad at Gravity and in your solo work) have inspired me to become a musician and songwriter. Let it be known that every square mile in and around the Chicago area has heard your songs being played loud and clear out of my car stereo. Listening to MaG songs and your songs right along with Chevelle and Incubus before my college basketball games help me relax and prepare, and much of the music I’ve written and performed owes a great deal to your work. I wanted to personally thank you and I wish you all the best!
    Keep creating exceptional music!

  19. Preston says:

According to imdb, you did some tv show producing and a little acting (uncredited of course). What was that like? Any chance you will do that (or be a band frontman) again? Awesome job on that album!

  20. Preston says:

Oh, I was also wondering, and since your band a music video for “Walk Away” I thought you would know. Is it true that the artist has to pay for the music video? Or is that a job for the manager, record producer or sombody else?

  21. Gerd Hess says:

    Hi Mr.

your version from “The Letter” is so simple but damned really fucking good!
This has inspired me, to arrange my own version from this great title.
If you interest on it, it would be a great honor for me to send this up to you.
Itยดs a more a RockยดnRoll version.

Greetings from the heart of Bavaria/Germany

  22. Brittany Lee says:

I’m getting married next year and really want to use your version for our first dance and would love if you could record that song for and make it so I can download it or send me a cd? I would give $$$ please please!!!!

I am a big fan of yours, and admire you. You scream intelligence and humour.

  27. Arki says:

hey hello, i just wanted to say that walk away has been and will always be one of my favorite songs of all time, i can say the same for the members in my band and you have one of the nicest voices i have ever heard
good to know about the vocalist of such and awesome songs, i will always keep listening to your work, the same way as i have been doing for the last years
    greetings from Panama

  28. DiAzu says:

Hey! I need to tell you this. I’ve always admired your talent as a musician, and it would totally rock to hear more from you, in a band or solo. Anyway, just wanted to make sure that you got my support whatever you choose to do.
I have a copy of the album of MaG, I think is the best album i have. It combines so many great things, and I love the vocal work. It’s too bad that the band didn’t make another album, but I bet it would have been even greater.

    Greetings from Guatemala. =D

  29. Kat says:

Hey! As an aspiring singer myself, I understand the heart and soul that has to he poured into the music you sing. And you give your songs More than they deserve! But that’s a good thing!! As much as I would love to have you as a vocal coach or singing partner even for a day, I know you’re a busy man! ๐Ÿ™‚ I saw that you live playing WOW! I would so love to banter back an fourth about it… But sadly I Only watch that game take my boyfriend away from me and real life…so that’s about all I can say about that! Keep making music!! Us fans out here crave it, and it is crucial to our survival!!! <3

  30. Johnny Morales says:

So do you know of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils from way back when.

  31. Jenny from Missouri says:

I absolutely love your music please upload more!!

  32. Will and Elin says:

My girlfriend and I were watching random videos on youtube an hour ago, when we stumbled upon a recommended video of you trying on warby parker glasses. Funnily enough i was looking for a pair yesterday (hence the recommendation, most probably). We then proceeded to watch another video of yours, dog sitting in L.A, which led us to this page. Another strange coincidence, about 4 hours ago, i bought 2 of my favourite pens, to add to our collection. A light blue and darker blue 0.5 V5 Pilot pens!
Our favourite director is Paul Thomas Anderson and we love reading Nick Hornby.
    The internet rocks!

  33. dallas says:

I love your music. Very inspirational. You are very talented.
Keep up the good work. Ive been following your stuff on youtube since 2008. You have a gift…too bad the main
    Stream media doesnt see that.

  34. PIPO says:

I just found you, I know you from the band that appeared in the film of the dragons. I would like to hear what you are up to in music now, I do not have yet.
Running the risk of not being original and maybe bothering you a little, let me thank you for the music you created with that band, I keep hearing regularly.
    Take care!

  35. Zw1d says:

Jake Fowler is an excelent musician, I was trying really hard to find any trace of him but he completly disappeared, i think you even responded to me like two years ago about your lack of knowledge about his fate. Don’t you have any news about him now? I myself had a band with toxic musicians, so I know that stuff, but still I’d like to get anything about him. Isn’t he dead or something? There’s NOTHING about him in the net : o

  36. Akenra X says:

Let me first say, I feel like I missed something big. I was at work listening to Pandora and Walk Away came on. Your vocals and the harmonies got me listening closely, wondering where the song was going musically…wow. I immediately bought the CD Resonance through Amazon. Ignorantly I thought I’d discovered this awesome new band…only to find it was a 2002 release. Wikipedia told me it was the band’s only release. Instantly bummed. So I’ve been trolling the internet to find footage and anything else I could find. Glad I stumbled on your site and the Interstate Love Song vid convinced me your talents are real, God has given you a gift my friend…but I’m sure you know this. God bless.
